How to plan your first visit to New Orleans (Without feeling overwhelmed)
New Orleans has always been high on my bucket travel list and now I know why… what an incredible place full of culture, incredible food, and music to fill your soul. New Orleans seemed like it would be easy to plan…until I started planning it.
Should we stay in the French Quarter? How many days do we need? Is it all Bourbon Street?
If it’s your first time visiting, here’s how I’d plan it so you can experience this incredible city without feeling overwhelmed or rushed.
Step 1: Decide how many days you actually need
For the first trip, I recommend 3-4 days.
This will give you enough time to:
Explore historic neighborhoods
Experience the food scene
Add a few unique activities (like take a horse & carriage ride through the French Quarter)
Leave room to slow down and just enjoy New Orleans
Step 2: Choose where to stay carefully
Where you stay will completely shape your trip. Think about your travel style:
French Quarter:
Best if you want to walk to major sights and enjoy being in the middle of the energy.
Warehouse District/Central Business District:
Good location with a slightly calmer pace.
Garden District:
Great for visitors wanting beautiful streets, architecture, and a quieter stay.
One thing I always do before trips is think and research not only the itinerary-but also what kind of trip I want it to feel like. Slower? Walkable? More dressed up? Your hotel location affects all of that.
One thing I’ve learned: Where you stay shapes the entire trip.
Step 3: Build your days around experiences- not attractions
Instead of creating a giant checklist, build each day around one main experience.
Example day:
Morning→ Coffee + Explore historic streets
Afternoon→ Lunch + sightseeing
Evening→ Dinner + live music
Leave room to wander.
Some of our favorite moments happened just walking through the city without rushing to the next stop.
And yes… I’m someone who plans outfits for trips too.
Not because every trip needs photos- but because packing intentionally helps me pack lighter and enjoy the experience more. New Orleans has such a fun atmosphere for putting together comfortable but elevated vacation outfits.
Step 4: Prioritize food (This is a must)
One mistake first-time visitors make is assuming they can just walk into everywhere and just get a seat.
Pick:
1-2 restaurants you definitely want (I highly recommend making reservations)
1 casual local spot
1 flexible meal
And DO NOT LEAVE NEW ORLEANS without trying beignets from Cafe du Monde!!!!
Sometimes the iconic places are iconic for a reason. I asked a few locals if Cafe’ du Monde is really the best place to get a beignet and they all said absolutely.
Stopping at Cafe du Monde ended up being one of our favorite moments.
Step 5: Add one experience you’ll actually remember
When planning a first trip, I always recommend adding one experience that feels unique to that destination.
For New Orleans, Ours was a ghost tour.
Whether you believe the stories or not, it ended up being one of the most memorable parts of the trip because it gave us a completely different perspective on the city’s history and atmosphere.
It also made for one of our favorite evenings and I will always cherish this memory with my family.
You don’t need ten activities planned every day-sometimes one memorable experience is enough.
One of the most memorable parts of our New Orleans Trip.
Step 6: Leave room for a slow morning
New Orleans can make for surprisingly full days.
Build in:
A slower breakfast
Hotel or rental downtime
Flexible evenings
Time to wander
You’ll enjoy the city more if every hour isn’t scheduled.
My biggest first-time New Orleans tip
Don’t try to “see everything.”
Choose a few experiences, leave room to explore, enjoy the food, and let the city surprise you.
That’s usually what people remember the most.
If you’re planning a trip to New Orleans, where you stay can completely shape your experience. I’ve put together a full itinerary with exactly how to map out your days, what to prioritize, and how to make the most of your time- without the stress of figuring it all out yourself. And if you’d rather have something more personalized, you can also work with me directly as a travel advisor, and I’ll help you build a custom trip tailored specifically to you.
