How to explore Cinque Terre in one day
Cinque Terre was very high on my list when visiting Italy…I have seen so many dreamy photos on social media and couldn’t wait to see it with my own eyes. Cinque Terre is five rustic fishing villages perched along the Ligurian coast. while spending several days here allows for slower days and more exploring, it’s easy to see the towns in one day! with a bit of planning-you can enjoy a day soaked in the incredible beauty of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.
Getting There:
The easiest way to reach Cinque Terre is by train. From Florence, Pisa, or Genoa, take a regional train to La Spezia, the main gateway to the villages. From La Spezia, the Cinque Terre Express runs frequently, connecting all five towns in under 30 minutes total travel time. Driving is not recommended, as parking is limited and roads are narrow. our home base on our Italy trip was in Tuscany so we took a day drive and stopped to see the leaning tower of Pisa and then headed up to La Spezia to stay there for the night and explore Cinque Terre the next day
La spezia is a larger city right outside of the cinque terre towns and where we stayed had a train station that was a few minute walk from our hotel.

Best route for one day:
1.start early in Monterosso- the train will take you straight to Monterosso as the first stop and honestly i was so thrilled for this to be our first stop-you get off the train and are greeted with the most beautiful views! Monterosso is the largest and flattest of the five towns- I really liked it for the way it felt like you were visiting a beautiful beach resort. You will not want to miss sitting by the water enjoying lunch and an aperol spritz while taking in some of the most incredible views! Starting here lets you begin relaxed before crowds build in the smaller villages.

2. Vernazza- The postcard village: Next stop will be vernazza and often considered the most picturesque out of the villages. It’s a tiny harbor with colorful buildings stacked like paint swatches, and rustic colorful boats bobbing in the water.
to me it was the most romantic, lively and photogenic of the villages. make sure you take time to climb some of Doria castle tower and visit the ancient church. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds and softer lighting.

3. Corniglia- sits high above the sea instead of directly on it, which is why many visitors skip it- and that is exactly why that makes it so special! unfortunately we had to skip this town but it is supposed to feel very quiet, authentic feeling and has a small local feeling.
*You will walk about 380 steps from the train station-but when you reach the top will be rewarded with very beautiful views!

4. Manarola-My very favorite out of the five towns! Absolutely breathtaking-it is arguably the most dramatic village visually. colorful houses cascade down cliffs toward the sea, and the whole place glows in golden light.
this village really felt like stepping into a painting! it’s so beautiful and i had to just stop and take it all in and of course take a million photos and videos. Make sure to walk the famous cliffside viewpoint trail, watch people dive off the coves and have some wine at one of the bars overlooking the sea.

5. Riomaggiore- the perfect grand finale! This town is energetic and still has that small italian village feel, making it the ideal place to end your route. It Definitely has a livelier vibe than the others but still holds that cinque terre charm.
just a note-there are a lot of narrow stairways to get to the heart of town and to the restaurants but you are greeted with beautiful views the whole time.

Our day exploring the villages was easily one of the highlights of our trip. each stop had it’s own personality, its own views, and its own little moments that made us slow down and really appreciate where we were. from peaceful viewpoints to colorful harbors and sunset by the water, it felt like every turn revealed something unforgettable. it’s the kind of place that reminds you why travel is so special-not just for the sights, but for how it makes you feel while you’re there.
